panoramic view of Trapani - our home for one week!

In 1947, when I was seven years old, my parents, five brothers, two sisters, and I came to New York City from Italy. We traveled seven days on a freighter and landed on Ellis Island. That moment of entry on December 7, 1947, is still vivid. As we passed through immigration, I remember straining to see New York harbor through the windows of the processing center. In the distance, thousands of glowing lights dotted the skyline. The metropolis beckoned, and I intuitively grasped the promise, excitement, and staggering immensity of the place. Antonio Masi

Antonio Masi is President of the American Watercolor Society, and he uses watercolor, but his paintings do not look like watercolor paintings.  Watercolor being a thin medium, organically allows expression of the most delicate subjects, but Masi has developed a novel way to use watercolor thickly, in the same way others use oils thickly. It is an approach that produces exceptional results. Masi’s unique use of watercolor allows him to capture the mass, power and delicacy of his subjects.

Take this intimate tour of Trapani - that's where we will be lodging!
The goal of this workshop is to show the untapped power of watercolor. The focus will be on how to approach this medium from a contemporary point of view, powerful, emotional and delicate, not the traditional transparent way it is looked upon.
Antonio applies watercolor in a thick and juicy manner, giving his subjects a startling boldness. Learn how attention to details and unusual perspective make for poetic, moody works with strong textural qualities.
Antonio’s presentation will show the materials he uses (paints, paper, palette, brushes, etc.), his set-up and how he applies colors. Although he is known for his bridge paintings he will demonstrate different subjects as his approach is suited to any subject.
He will do a demonstration in the morning, while students watch and ask questions. The remainder of the day will be one-to-one instruction. He hopes this will give an insight into his technique.

The aim of the workshop is for each student to discover their inner voice and find their own style.
