The principles of painting are fundamental, regardless of the medium you choose. As an artist who began with oil painting but eventually favored watercolors, I've come to appreciate these principles in various forms.
First and foremost, composition is crucial. Whether it's oils, watercolors, acrylics, gouache, or pastels, a well-composed painting draws the viewer in
and keeps their attention.
In oil painting, you may blend colors on the palette, while watercolors require careful layering and transparency.
Brushwork and technique play a vital role. In oil painting, you can achieve arange of textures and effects with different brushes and strokes. Watercolor demands control of wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques.
The concept of light and shadow is universal. Mastering how to create depth, volume, and dimension through highlights and shadows enhances your
artistry, whether you work with oils or watercolors. Regardless of medium, your work should have a narrative or emotional resonance.
I can demo in both mediums.

Painting beyond technique opens a realm of boundless creativity and personal expression. While mastering the technical aspects is vital, true artistry emerges when an artist transcends these boundaries. Technique alone can yield visually pleasing results, but it lacks the soul that distinguishes great art. Painting beyond technique means delving into emotions, thoughts, and unique perspectives to evoke profound responses in the viewer.
Artists who venture beyond the constraints of technique find the courage to experiment, embrace mistakes, and explore unconventional methods. They use colors, strokes, and textures not just to replicate reality, but to convey emotions, stories, and hidden truths.
This artistic journey is liberating, enabling artists to forge their signature style, inspiring others along the way. By breaking free from technique, artists connect with their inner selves and the world around them, revealing intimate aspects of human existence.
They leave imprints of their souls on the canvas, sparking a powerful dialogue between art and audience, transcending time and space. Ultimately, painting beyond technique is a profound exploration of the human spirit, capturing the essence of life itself.

Part of the article in Watercolor Artist 2022 issue about Antonio.
When I was seven years old, my parents, five brothers, two sisters, and I came to New York City from Italy. We traveled seven days on a freighter and landed on Ellis Island. That moment of entry on December 7, 1947, is still vivid. As we passed through immigration, I remember straining to see New York harbor through the windows of the processing center. In the distance, thousands of glowing lights dotted the skyline. The metropolis beckoned, and I intuitively grasped the promise, excitement, and staggering immensity of the place. Antonio Masi

The goal of this workshop is to show the untapped power of watercolor. The focus will be on how to approach this medium from a contemporary point of view, powerful, emotional and delicate, not the traditional transparent way it is looked upon.
Antonio applies watercolor in a thick and juicy manner, giving his subjects a startling boldness. Learn how attention to details and unusual perspective make for poetic, moody works with strong textural qualities.
Antonio’s presentation will show the materials he uses (paints, paper, palette, brushes, etc.), his set-up and how he applies colors. Although he is known for his bridge paintings, he will demonstrate different subjects as his approach is suited to any subject.
He will do a demonstration in the morning, while students watch and ask questions. The remainder of the day will be one-to-one instruction. He hopes this will give an insight into his technique.
The aim of the workshop is for each student to discover their inner voice and find their own style.
